Lessons God Taught Me While Washing Dishes

There are moments throughout the day that require very little of our attention.

Washing dishes.

Folding laundry.

Packing boxes.

Rocking a baby to sleep.

Waiting in line.

Pulling weeds.

Reading bedtime stories.

Our hands stay busy, but our minds begin to wander.

You know the feeling.

Out of nowhere, you remember something you had completely forgotten. A Bible verse comes to mind. A line from a hymn. A conversation you had years ago. A sermon your pastor preached months earlier that didn’t seem to stick at the time.

Then suddenly… there it is.

I’m sure someone could explain the science behind why our brains work this way, and perhaps they’re right. But I also believe the Lord often uses those quiet moments to gently remind us of the things we need most.

Life is loud.

We rush from one responsibility to the next. We finish church, say our goodbyes, and before long we’re asking, “What’s for lunch?”

The busyness isn’t necessarily wrong. It’s simply part of life.

But sometimes, when the noise settles, even for a few minutes, the Lord quietly whispers,

“Remember Me.”

Sometimes He brings conviction.

Sometimes He brings comfort.

Sometimes He reminds us of a promise we desperately needed that day.

Other times, He simply gives us clarity.

Have you ever struggled with a problem for hours or even days, unable to find the answer?

Then one afternoon you’re outside enjoying the fresh air, washing dishes, driving down the road, or doing some other ordinary task…

…and suddenly the answer comes.

I’ve experienced that more times than I can count.

My life has many moving parts. Between motherhood, marriage, work, writing, and everything else that fills the day, I don’t always have uninterrupted time to think deeply about a difficult situation.

Instead, I’ve learned that some thoughts need space.

Some questions aren’t solved by trying harder.

They simply need time to settle while we faithfully continue doing the work that’s already in front of us.

Prayer often works the same way.

We bring a burden before the Lord. Maybe it’s a sickness. A strained relationship. A difficult decision. We pray faithfully, yet it can feel as though nothing is happening.

I’ve found that many times the Lord isn’t ignoring me.

He’s teaching me.

Teaching me to wait.

Teaching me to trust.

Teaching me to be still.

Teaching me that not every answer arrives on my timeline.

Even now, there are prayers I continue to bring before Him. I don’t always know what He’s doing behind the scenes, but I know His timing has always been wiser than mine.

So if you’re carrying something heavy today, don’t give up simply because you haven’t received an answer yet.

Keep praying.

Keep trusting.

Keep listening.

You never know when the Lord might choose an ordinary moment… while washing dishes, folding laundry, or rocking a baby to sleep… to remind you that He has been there all along.

Perhaps that’s one of His sweetest gifts.

Not that He only meets us in the extraordinary.

But that He is faithful to meet us in the ordinary as well.
